Maybe around the year 400, someone wrote “The Acts of Andrew and Matthias.”I After Judas betrayed Jesus, the apostles cast lots to find out who God wanted to be an apostle. Matthias was chosen. Sometime after that, this non-biblical book supposes, the apostles got together to find out where God was sending them. You know how the last person hired tends to get the … less pleasant assignments? Matthias was about to go on a journey to “the country of the man-eaters.” This wasn’t a simple Hall and Oates warning to “watch out boy, she’ll chew you up.”II No, these people were really man-eaters. It was their only food. I’ll spare you the gory details.

They seized people, brought them to their land, and performed magic that altered their hearts and made their minds deranged. People lived like animals and ate grass. Then the locals ate them. Needless to say, tourism was not one of their major industries. They gave their magic potion to Matthias, but “his heart was[n’t] altered, [and] his mind [wasn’t] deranged” because of his faith. Matthias prayed and Jesus told him he would be alright. Jesus was sending Andrew to help. Long story short, Andrew confronts Satan, Matthias’s prison cell is opened, judgment rains down, lives are restored, the people repent, and a church is planted in that land. Miraculous, happy ending.
